Literacy

At ABHS, nearly 50% of incoming 9th graders are 2 or more grade levels behind in reading.  In order to assist these students in acquiring the skills and habits needed to prepare for post-secondary education and life, we institued a reading class.  The reading class meets twice a week for a total of 3 hours using the Plugged into Reading curriculum.

Plugged Into Reading is a program that motivates struggling high school readers to develop reading skills and strategies through a research-proven blend of teacher-directed instruction, peer-supported learning, and independent reading, all supported by high-interest texts, detailed lesson plans, and professionally narrated audiobooks.

Plugged Into Reading allows teachers to gradually release learning responsibility to students through its three-step instructional model, guided-reading lesson plans, and engagagement in small-group activities. Ultimately, students gain confidence as they check comprehension with every book and get valuable practice with skills they are required to demonstrate in school and on standardized tests. Every lesson is clearly linked to widely accepted standards for reading and language arts so that we as teachers can easily track development of the skills and strategies our students need.
