Maria Sanchez, class of 2005, completed her undergraduate degree in Women Studies at NMSU and now attends law school at the University of New Mexico . At ABHS, “I was able to make a connection between what I was passionate about in relation to the community.” She cites women’s issues, civil rights, and supporting young people to engage in the policy making process as her most focused passions. Maria credits her time at ABHS for much of her success–including her commitment to service, her acceleration through college, and the connections she maintains within the community.

Guillermo Diaz, class of 2009, is the first in his family to earn a high school diploma. Guillermo came to ABHS from an alternative middle school for at risk students and left with an academic record of all A’s and B’s. When asked what made the difference, Guillermo says, “People actually cared about me and supported me. They didn’t let me give up.” Guillermo is currently enrolled in a collaborative program between Central New Mexico Community College and New Mexico Highlands University pursuing a degree in social work.

Aine Brazil , class of 2010, studies political science on full scholarship at Mills College in Oakland , CA. Aine is the first in her family to attend college and attributes much of her success to ABHS. “The teachers cared about where I ended up in life and created opportunities for me that I would not have had otherwise.” Aine’s decision to study political science stemmed from her Senior Project with Enlace Communitario, a social justice organization working to eliminate domestic violence in the Latino immigrant community.

Brian Gillespie, class of 2004, completed his degree in Cinematic Arts at the University of New Mexico and is now the Director of the Southwest Film Center at UNM. His interest in films began during his Senior Service Learning Project, when he produced a documentary film about the Albuquerque bus system while working with a local non-profit organization called Basement Films. About his time at ABHS he says, “Like any experience, you only get as much out of it as you put into it. Thankfully, I put a lot of energy into learning and exploring during those four years.”
